Tell us all about your love of books for your chance to receive a free Voxblock audio book reader and win a set of POGS headphones!

Hi, I’m Catherine and I have been working for VICTA since November 2024. As a child I was a huge Jacqueline Wilson and Cathy Cassidy fan. I really enjoyed reading books about little girls my own age and imagining what it would be like to be them. I had a huge imagination, and I could often be found talking to myself in the garden or on the playground, creating a whole new world around me based on the characters in my books.
As an adult, I went on to study Theatre and English Literature at university because I love storytelling, and I feel like diving into the worlds crafted by authors and playwrights is just like playing ‘make believe’ when you’re older. I like finding the hidden meanings within a piece of writing, and discussing books with my friends to hear their perspectives – which are often different to my own. The way you read and the message you take from a book is very specific to you as an individual, dependant on your life experience and sense of the world. I think that’s what makes literature so interesting.
When I was 13, I was diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease, which if you didn’t know, heavily reduces your central vision. This is the vision you use for taking in fine detail, AKA, reading! Luckily, we live in an age where E-readers, Kindles, and audiobooks exist. Transitioning to electronic or audio versions was a bit difficult for me, as I felt like I was losing a really important piece of my personality in no longer buying and collecting traditional hard-copy books. I felt embarrassed to be in class or with my friends reading in a larger text or on a different device to everyone around me. However, I soon learned to embrace my differences and appreciate the tools available to me which allow me to keep reading.
The thing that everyone talks about after they’ve finished a book is how it made them feel. The world they experienced and the messages they took from it. Whether you’ve got a bookshelf full of hard copies or a library full of audiobooks on your phone, that is the same for everyone. If you love books and stories, it doesn’t matter how you access them.
Now it’s your turn to share the books and characters that inspire you to take part in our World Book Day celebration offer and competition.
