How I raise awareness on TikTok
Hi, I’m Tegan and I’m 19 years old. I was born blind and have very limited vision; I’m a brailleist and a white cane user. Alongside studying at university, I am a passionate activist. I used to be a member of the Welsh Youth Parliament and am now a proud VICTA Changemaker!
I started making TikTok videos because I wanted to show people that being blind doesn’t hold me back, and that I can still achieve all the things I want to despite the barriers I face. In addition to more formal content that sheds light on serious topics like blindness and ADHD, I also spread awareness with videos that are fun and lighthearted. Not everything I make is linked to my blindness because after all, I’m a human being, and not everything in my life is positive or negative.
I also like to express this through the music that I write, and I’m currently working towards releasing my first single, Behind My Eyes, which I posted a short snippet of on TikTok. People seem to really like and relate to it, which means a lot to me. A lot of people with disabilities can feel isolated and like they are the only ones going through the issues that they’re struggling with. The little community I’ve built on TikTok of people that I’ve never met but feel connected with is so important, as it reminds us that we’re not alone.
I want my account to be for sighted people too, as a space where they can learn and better understand blindness, as well as get answers to some questions they wouldn’t normally ask.
I hope to help make a difference, and I look forward to what is to come for me and the rest of the VICTA Changemakers.
