NO LIMITS Issue 6

By Grace Hill

What does ‘no limits’ mean to you? For me, it means finding something special in amongst the challenges you face. A piece of magic that makes you feel like you can achieve anything, whether that’s in reality or in your dreams. If you’re expecting the story of a blind girl who has climbed Mount Everest or won the Paralympics, get ready to be disappointed. Because, if I’m being brutally honest, I find it very hard to pair the concept of ‘no limits’ with my vision impairment because I’m scared of becoming a cliché. I don’t want people to think I have achieved my dreams because I can’t see. Because the one thing that makes me feel like I have no limits has very little connection to my vision impairment at all. It’s not a football with a bell in it, a guide dog or a cane, it’s Kiss FM.

Grace singing into a microphone

I have been listening to Kiss FM since I was 5, I am now nearly 23 and have only just come to accept that I am my own biggest limit because I hold myself back by being anxious and stuck in my ways. And this is all because Kiss has taught me how to express myself through music so I can free up brain space to focus on achieving new things and making others proud. When I put Kiss on, I don’t feel blind, unless of course I am following the sound of it to work out where I am going. When I put Kiss on I feel, if only in my head, like I have no limits, like I am flying. You might say if I tried, I could Kiss the sky.

If you’re struggling with anxiety about your limits right now, please know that you are not alone. It does get better when you learn your limits or learn to feel like you don’t have any. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be able to Kiss the sky too?

And finally, I’d like to end with a closing question to get you all thinking! What is your piece of magic that makes you feel like anything is possible? Let me know in the comments below!

About Grace…

My name is Grace and I am 22 years old and live in Suffolk. My short term goal is to get into employment but my dream is to be a singer/songwriter and I love to dance too but I’m not very good. In the picture I have my right hand on my hip and my left hand raised to my face to blow a kiss.

I love Kiss FM as it has always helped me express myself and I love writing songs too.

You can listen to me chatting about my passion for music on the VICTA YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/XSRDbibunYo

On World Music Day Grace chatted to the Student Portal about how music and her love of KISS FM have been such a positive influence in her life and also helped her mental health. Listen to the interview below…

I can relate to this ,when I was a teenager l also felt free whilst playing an instrument. I went on to pursue a career in teaching music because of my love of playing.
My personal favourite female songwriter has to be Nina Simone (Blue for you album)
